Let's take a trip from the other side of town
It might take us a while but who knows what might be found
in the deepest darkest forest, or in the waters cold embrace
of that muddy murky river by the tracks of that old place
It's half an hour to the corner store walking down 138th
couldn't let you go the whole way
When we got to the forest shortcut we ventured deep inside
and we separated from space and time
with the chorus that you sang with the words all painted red
and we jumped into the water with our clothes still on
and we hid away for years in that forest by the road
waiting for the stars to disappear, and we were young
My vision's filled with a green and grey blur
of city sidewalks nestled in a forest still so pure
and I can see the red lights flashing and the chaos in the street
but in that black lagoon it all melts down around your feet
And I can hear that freight train coming from a mile down the track
and once I leave the city I ain't never coming back
but if I could say just one thing that I'll miss about that place
is that humble little forest where we hid so many days
And I didn't know about it then but I can listen to it now
I can hear that cold stream cutting through the silence
and as we sat below that bridge in the dirt and in the mud
I could hear that lonesome trumpet calling
